Severe tophaceous gout linked to ~47% higher LAVi and impaired LA pump function vs healthy controls.
Why the study?
The impact of gout on left ventricular and left atrial function was not well characterized.

Does gout severity impair left ventricular and left atrial function?
Absolute Event Rate: 29.6% vs 20.07%
p-value: p=<0.001
Severe gout is associated with subclinical left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction as well as left atrial dysfunction.
Pan et al. (2014) conducted a cross-sectional in Gout (n=173). Tophaceous gout (Stage III) vs. Age-matched controls without hyperuricemia or gout was evaluated on Maximal left atrial volume index (LAVi) (p=<0.001). Severe tophaceous gout was significantly associated with an enlarged maximal left atrial volume index (29.60 vs 20.07 ml/m2) and impaired left atrial pump function compared to healthy controls.
