Key result
Higher AIP independently linked to greater CAD severity.
Why the study?
Does the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) correlate with coronary artery disease severity better than the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index in patients undergoing coronary angiography?
Observational (n=61)
Does the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) correlate with coronary artery disease severity better than the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index in patients undergoing coronary angiography?
The atherogenic index of plasma is a better independent predictor of coronary atherosclerotic burden than the triglyceride-glucose index, potentially linked through fatty acid remodeling.
AIP may refine CAD severity estimation on angiography; leaves open superiority to TyG and clinical utility pending prospective validation.
Background The relative contributions of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index to coronary artery disease (CAD) severity remain unclear, and their links with fatty acid metabolism have not been systematically investigated. Methods Sixty-one patients undergoing coronary angiography were evaluated. CAD severity was quantified using the Gensini score. Plasma fatty acid composition was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and desaturase activities were estimated using product-to-precursor ratios. Results AIP demonstrated a significant positive association with Gensini score and remained an independent predictor of CAD severity, whereas TyG showed a limited association. HDL lost its independent predictive value after adjustment for AIP. Both AIP and TyG were associated with insulin resistance–related parameters. Among desaturase indices, delta-6 desaturase showed positive associations with body mass index (BMI), insulin, VLDL, and AIP, whereas delta-5 desaturase demonstrated inverse associations with BMI and VLDL. Conclusions AIP more effectively reflects coronary atherosclerotic burden than TyG. The association between desaturase activities and AIP suggests a mechanistic connection between fatty acid remodeling and coronary atherosclerosis. Is this an encore abstract? No

Batırel et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Coronary Artery Disease (n=61). Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) vs. Triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was evaluated on Coronary artery disease severity (Gensini score). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) demonstrated a significant positive association with the Gensini score and remained an independent predictor of coronary artery disease severity.
