This earthquake, the first in New Zealand to reach magnitude 7 since that in the Fiordland region on May 24, 1960, was centred about 15 miles to the west of the position of the magnitude 7.6 Buller earthquake of June 16, 1929. The epicentre is in rough hill country about 10 miles north of the small town of Inangahua, where the maximum intensity was reported.
