Key result
Childhood cancer history linked to ~89% higher overt CVD risk vs the general population.
Why the study?
The cardiac and vascular late sequelae including cardiovascular risk factors and disease in long-term childhood cancer survivors were not well quantified compared to the general population.
Population
1002 childhood cancer survivors aged 23-48 years diagnosed before age 15 in Germany
Comparison
Childhood cancer survivors vs general population cohorts including Gutenberg Health Study
Design
Prospective cohort study with standardized cardiovascular screening

Elevated CV burden in CCS warrants clinical vigilance; leaves open optimal screening protocols pending prospective validation.
Cohort (n=1,002)
Relative Risk: 1.89 (95% CI 1.34–2.66)
Childhood cancer survivors have a significantly increased risk of premature cardiovascular risk factors and overt cardiovascular disease compared to the general population.
Faber et al. (2018) conducted a cohort in Childhood cancer survivors (n=1,002). History of childhood cancer vs. General population cohorts was evaluated on Overt cardiovascular disease (CVD) (RR 1.89, 95% CI 1.34-2.66). A history of childhood cancer was associated with a significantly increased risk of overt cardiovascular disease compared to the general population (RR 1.89; 95% CI 1.34-2.66).
