Familial hypercholesterolemia is not linked to altered pulse wave velocity compared to normocholesterolemic controls.
Why the study?
It was unclear whether vascular pulse wave velocity as a measure of arterial stiffness is altered in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia compared with controls.
Does familial hypercholesterolemia increase vascular pulse wave velocity compared to normocholesterolemic controls?
Meta-Analysis (n=561)
Does familial hypercholesterolemia increase vascular pulse wave velocity compared to normocholesterolemic controls?
Mean Difference: 0.17 (95% CI -0.31–0.65)
p-value: p=0.489
Familial hypercholesterolemia is associated with increased intima-media thickness but not significantly altered pulse wave velocity compared to normocholesterolemic controls.

No support for increased arterial stiffness by PWV in FH; challenges IMT-based expectations and leaves open alternative vascular markers.
Reiner et al. (2019) conducted a meta-analysis in Familial hypercholesterolemia (n=561). Familial hypercholesterolemia vs. Normocholesterolemic controls was evaluated on Pulse wave velocity (PWV) (WMD 0.17 m/s, 95% CI -0.31, 0.65, p=0.489). Familial hypercholesterolemia was not associated with significantly altered pulse wave velocity compared to normocholesterolemic controls (WMD 0.17 m/s).
