Summary Using photoelastic stress analysis, this study shows that the tapered, self‐threading, Dentatus endodontic screw causes severe wedging forces on installation. These stresses are magnified by increases in dowel diameter and the application of occlusal loads. The Dentatus screw produces more severe stress concentrations than the Unitek, Whaledent, Radix, and Kurer dowel designs; this is true both during installation and under load.
