Studies carried out with stereospecifically labelled mevalonic acids have confirmed that in the biosynthesis of cholesterol the 6α, 7β and 15α hydrogen atoms are removed. It is also shown that the C‐16 hydrogen atoms remain undisturbed in cholesterol biosynthesis. The non‐involvement of the C‐16 hydrogen atoms in the biosynthesis has provided further support for the previously proposed mechanism of the removal of the 14α methyl group in sterol biosynthesis.
