Prednisone and aspirin are linked to normal umbilical and ductal flow velocities in anticardiolipin-positive pregnancies.
Why the study?
The effects of prednisone and aspirin treatment on umbilical artery and ductal blood flow velocities in ACA positive patients with previous pregnancy losses were not established.
Does treatment with prednisone and aspirin normalize umbilical artery and ductal blood flow velocities in pregnant patients with previous pregnancy losses and positive anticardiolipin antibody?
Observational (n=15)
Does treatment with prednisone and aspirin normalize umbilical artery and ductal blood flow velocities in pregnant patients with previous pregnancy losses and positive anticardiolipin antibody?
Treatment with prednisone and aspirin in ACA-positive pregnant patients with prior losses is associated with normal umbilical and ductal flow velocities and good pregnancy outcomes.
May support prednisone-aspirin in ACA-positive recurrent loss with normal Dopplers; leaves open randomized confirmation of benefit.
Fifteen patients with previous pregnancy losses and positive plasma anticardiolipin antibody (ACA) were treated with prednisone (15 mg/day) and aspirin (80 mg/day). We measured Doppler velocimetries of umbilical artery and ductus arteriosus at intervals of 2 to 3 weeks starting from 20 weeks of gestation until delivery. Umbilical artery systolic/diastolic ratios (S/D) and maximum systolic velocities of ductus arteriosus did not differ from normal values. There were no poor outcomes in the treated group. ACA positive patients with previous poor pregnancy outcome when treated with prednisone and aspirin have umbilical artery and ductal flow velocities similar to those of the normal population.

Forouzan et al. (1993) conducted an observational in Previous pregnancy losses and positive plasma anticardiolipin antibody (n=15). Prednisone and aspirin vs. Normal population was evaluated on Umbilical artery systolic/diastolic ratios (S/D) and maximum systolic velocities of ductus arteriosus. Prednisone and aspirin treatment in pregnant patients with positive anticardiolipin antibody and previous pregnancy losses resulted in umbilical artery and ductal flow velocities similar to normal values.
