Key result
Lateral femoral circumflex artery supplies most femoral head perfusion in ~89% of skeletally immature pigs.

Can laser Doppler flowmetry accurately measure femoral head microcirculation and identify arterial supply in a pig model?
Laser Doppler flowmetry is an effective method for measuring femoral head microcirculation and identifying the primary arterial supply in a preclinical pig model.
Bassett et al. (1991) studied this question. Selective occlusion of the arterial blood supply to the hip with laser Doppler flowmetry monitoring was evaluated on Femoral head perfusion. Laser Doppler flowmetry demonstrated that the lateral femoral circumflex artery was largely responsible for femoral head perfusion in 8 of 9 skeletally immature pigs.
