Contact exposure to Foot-and-Mouth Disease in 6 heifers caused early respiratory viral replication, viremia, and decreased leucocyte opsono-phagocytic activity.
Why the study?
The time-course and immune response parameters of experimental Foot-and-Mouth Disease in non-immune heifers after contact exposure were not fully characterized.
Summary The time‐course of experimental Foot‐and‐Mouth Disease in six non‐immune heifers after contact exposure was followed and some humoral and cellular parameters were assessed. Considerable viral replication, with interferon production, in the upper respiratory tract was detected in the first days post‐infection in the absence of any evident vesicular lesion. Virus and interferon regularly appeared in the blood a few days later. A decrease of the opsono‐phagocytic activity of adherent cells from peripheral blood leucocytes was observed in all heifers. The kinetics of antibody production clearly differed from that of intradermolingually infected cattle, with interesting features related to IgM and IgG isotypes.

Contact exposure to Foot-and-Mouth Disease was evaluated on Humoral and cellular parameters (viral replication, interferon production, opsono-phagocytic activity, antibody kinetics). Contact exposure to Foot-and-Mouth Disease in 6 heifers caused early respiratory viral replication, viremia, and decreased leucocyte opsono-phagocytic activity.
