Key result
Diabetic nephropathy is associated with ~70% lower tubular MAS expression versus healthy controls.
Why the study?
The role and expression of the ACE2-Ang 1-7-MAS axis in human diabetic nephropathy were not well characterized compared with controls and other kidney diseases.
Population
17 diabetic nephropathy patients, 17 healthy kidney donors, and 11 minimal change nephrotic syndrome patients
Comparison
Diabetic nephropathy patients vs healthy kidney donors and MCNS patients
Design
Case-control study

The tubular ACE2-Ang 1-7-MAS axis is downregulated in human diabetic nephropathy, suggesting a loss of its counter-regulatory protective effects.
Yoshiko Nishizawa (2012) conducted a case-control in Diabetic Nephropathy (n=45). Diabetic nephropathy vs. Healthy controls and MCNS patients was evaluated on Tubular MAS expression (density/pixel) (p=<0.001). Tubular MAS expression was significantly downregulated in patients with diabetic nephropathy (median 7.33 density/pixel) compared with healthy controls (24.51) and MCNS patients (23.75).
