Low-dose canagliflozin improves CD34+ endothelial progenitor cell function and antioxidant expression versus placebo in T2D.
Why the study?
The effect of canagliflozin on CD34+ endothelial progenitor cells, a cellular biomarker predicting cardiovascular risk, in type 2 diabetes patients with CKD has not been explored.
Does canagliflozin improve CD34+ve endothelial progenitor cell function in patients with type 2 diabetes?

Does canagliflozin improve CD34+ve endothelial progenitor cell function in patients with type 2 diabetes?
p-value: p=0.0047
Low-dose canagliflozin improves endothelial progenitor cell function and cardiometabolic biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes, suggesting potential mechanisms for its cardiovascular benefits.
May support vascular repair in T2D beyond glycemic control; extends RCT evidence for SGLT2i effects on endothelial progenitors.

Nandula et al. (2021) conducted an RCT in Type 2 diabetes with chronic kidney disease (n=29). Canagliflozin vs. Placebo was evaluated on CD34+ve cell number, migratory function, and gene expression (p=0.0047). Low-dose canagliflozin significantly improved CD34+ endothelial progenitor cell migratory function and increased expression of antioxidants and endothelial markers compared to placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes.
