The effect of miconazole nitrate applied topically to problem dermatophyte infections (primarily tinea cruris) was studied in double-blind clinical trials. A 2% cream preparation was compared against its vehicle in 62 men. The miconazole treatment was both clinically and mycologically effective in more than 90% of the active treatment group (vs less than 20% in the placebo control group) with prompt relief of symptoms. More important, there was but a single recurrence of disease in the miconazole group during the month after therapy was stopped. (JAMA230:72-75, 1974)
