In order to explain irradiation effects in structural terms the crystal structures have been determined of triglycine sulphate (a) with the minimum X-ray dose consistent with adequate diffraction data and (b) after X-irradiation/field treatment. The temperatures of the dielectric peak after the experiments were 48.5°C and 39°C respectively. The broad features of the structures are essentially the same. However, while the low-dose structure may be designated glycine diglycinium sulphate, the irradiated species, by virtue of one different hydrogen position, is diglycine glycinium bisulphate. The ferroelectric reversal in pure triglycine sulphate and the inhibition of switching after irradiation are discussed.
