Phosphine was discovered in 1783 by Gengembre but, until Cyanamid began work in 1955, very little research had been concentrated on replacing one or more of the phosphorus to hydrogen bonds by phosphorus to carbon bonds. This paper describes that part of this research which focused on creating and reducing to commercial practice new organophosphine extractants for both metals and organic solutes.
