Key result
Radial access is linked to a ~62% reduction in FMD, indicating procedure-induced endothelial dysfunction.
Why the study?
The impact of percutaneous invasive coronary procedures using a radial approach on endothelial function of the radial artery was not well characterized.
Observational (n=15)
No
Radial access may induce transient endothelial dysfunction; hypothesis-generating for vascular sequelae, needs prospective validation.

Sabatowski et al. (2018) conducted an observational in Stable angina requiring elective coronary catheterization (n=15). Percutaneous invasive coronary procedures using a radial approach vs. Baseline (before procedure) was evaluated on Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the radial artery (p=0.006). Percutaneous invasive coronary procedures using a radial approach significantly decreased radial artery flow-mediated dilatation from 19.8% to 7.6% (p=0.006), indicating procedure-induced endothelial dysfunction.
