Key result
Adjuvant doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide for breast cancer is linked to ~40% incidence of moderate-to-severe anemia.
Why the study?
The incidence and severity of prechemotherapy anemia and chemotherapy-induced anemia in stage II and III breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide were not well described.
Observational (n=310)
Yes
A significant proportion of stage II and III breast cancer patients are anemic prior to chemotherapy, and the incidence of moderate to severe anemia increases substantially during doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide treatment.

Anemia common and often untreated in early breast cancer on AC chemo; leaves open whether proactive monitoring or intervention improves outcomes.
Kirshner et al. (2004) conducted an observational in Stage II and III Breast Cancer (n=310). Adjuvant doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (AC) chemotherapy was evaluated on Moderate to severe anemia (hemoglobin <10 g/dl) during chemotherapy. In women with stage II and III breast cancer receiving adjuvant doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide, 31.3% were anemic prechemotherapy and 40.0% developed moderate to severe anemia during treatment.
