Boundary-value problems for the reduced wave equation that give rise to Gaussian and generalized Gaussian beams in paraxial regions are studied via complex ray geometrical optics. Expressions for the field valid both within and outside the paraxial region are obtained, and the results are compared with those given by paraxial wave optics and evanescent-wave theory.
