The present two-part series describes a simple, rapid approach to predicting experimental conditions for satisfactory separation by liquid chromatography in columns. In the present article (Part I) a simple procedure is described for (a) rapidly evaluating an initial chromatogram to determine what resolution has been achieved, and (b) rapidly determining what change in resolution is required for given separation goals. No calculations are required. In Part II (to be published in the June issue), a simple procedure will be described which predicts the necessary change in separation conditions for the required change in resolution.
