Key result
Disrupting upstream AUGs boosts AT1R protein production ~6-fold versus wild type.
Why the study?
The regulatory role of upstream AUGs in the 5' leader sequence on rat angiotensin type 1a receptor expression and signaling was not fully understood.
Effect estimate: 5.7-fold increase
All four upstream AUGs in the 5' leader sequence of the AT1aR function cumulatively to suppress receptor expression and signaling by inhibiting translation.

Identifies translational control of AT1R; extends mechanistic insights but leaves open human disease relevance and therapeutic targeting.
Ji et al. (2004) studied this question. Disruption of upstream AUGs in the 5' leader sequence vs. Wild type (WT) was evaluated on AT(1)R protein production (5.7-fold increase). Disruption of all four upstream AUGs in the 5' leader sequence increased AT(1)R protein production by 5.7-fold and angiotensin II-induced inositol phosphate production by 5-fold versus wild type.
