MSB-1 cell line analysis reveals MDV-1-encoded miRNAs account for ~60% of the total miRNAome.
Why the study?
The role of viral and host microRNAs in Marek's disease virus-induced T-cell lymphomas and their contribution to oncogenesis was not well characterized.
High levels of expression of MDV-1-encoded miRNAs and potentially oncogenic host miRNAs suggest they may have major roles in MDV pathogenesis and neoplastic transformation.

Abundant MDV miRNAs may contribute to pathogenesis in avian models; leaves open their causal roles in neoplastic transformation.
Yao et al. (2008) studied Marek's disease (MDV-induced lymphoma). miRNA profiling was evaluated on Identification of MDV-1-encoded miRNAs. Analysis of the MSB-1 cell line identified 13 MDV-1-encoded miRNAs, with viral miRNAs accounting for >60% of the 5,099 sequences in the MSB-1 miRNAome.
