Key result
Metformin improves vascular endothelial reactivity, weight, blood pressure, and lipids versus placebo.
Why the study?
Endothelial dysfunction is an early marker of atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetic subjects, and the vascular effects of metformin in first-degree relatives with metabolic syndrome were unclear.
Population
31 first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome and normal glucose tolerance
Comparison
Metformin vs placebo
Design
Double-blind randomized controlled trial
Loading...
Metformin improves endothelial reactivity in normoglycemic at-risk relatives; extends vasculoprotective evidence beyond glycemic control.
RCT (n=31)
Double-blind

A 2006 study conducted an RCT in Metabolic syndrome and normal glucose tolerance in first-degree relatives of type 2 diabetic patients (n=31). Metformin vs. Placebo was evaluated on Endothelial function assessed by venous occlusion plethysmography (forearm blood flow and vascular resistance responses). Metformin improved vascular endothelial reactivity, decreased weight, BMI, systolic blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose, and improved lipid profile compared to placebo.
