No clinical indication was present in 58% (263 of 506) of hospital PPI discharge recommendations, and general practitioners continued non-indicated PPIs in 58% of cases for at least one month.
Indicated PPI therapy was discontinued in 33% of patients, and two-thirds of all non-indicated PPI regimens were initially started during the hospital stay.
A PPI prescription prior to hospital admission was the strongest predictor for non-indicated continuation (OR: 3.0; 95% CI: 1.7–5.4) as well as indicated continuation (OR: 3.2; 95% CI: 1.4–7.5).
