It is proved that an elastic medium which occupies a bounded region in three dimensional Euclidean space can be uniformly stabilized by means of traction forces applied on a portion of the boundary of the medium (the remaining portion being clamped) provided the geometry of the boundary is suitably restricted. It is also shown that in the absence of such restrictions the medium can still be strongly stabilized by such traction forces.
