Basal plasma growth hormone (GH) levels were elevated in kwashiorkor and came back to normal levels after treatment. Inmarasmic children the basal plasma GH levels were in the normal range and there was no significant change after nutritional rehabilitation. Chlorpromazine-induced sleep brought about a satisfactory increase in GH levels in children suffering from kwashiorkor both at the time of admission and after treatment. The increase in GH levels during sleep was inadequate at the time of admission in marasmic children and this did not improve even after 3–4 weeks of nutritional rehabilitation.
