Symposium volume on platelet roles in thrombosis; leaves open whether measurement techniques alter clinical outcomes in atherothrombotic disease.
This volume is based on a symposium sponsored by the Presbyterian Hospital of Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. It consists of 13 articles on various aspects of hemostasis and thrombosis, written by 17 contributors. Emphasis is placed on the role of platelets in hemostasis and their importance in the genesis of atheroma and thromboembolic events. Included in the monograph are articles on techniques to measure platelet function, the relation of prostaglandins to platelet function, the release reaction, platelet coagulant activities, the role of thrombin in platelet function, the interaction of platelet membrane proteins with nucleotides, heparin and platelets, contribution of RBCs to hemostasis, role of platelets in thrombosis, and antiplatelet drugs as antithrombotic agents. Extensive bibliographies are found at the end of each article. Also following each group of related articles, there is a discussion of the highlights of the presentations by the authors.
