Recent femtosecond transient absorption measurements in triphenylmethane dyes have shown quantum beats in the absorption recovery. A measurement of the phase of the quantum beats as a function of the probe wavelength indicates that the beats have significantly different character than those seen in impulsive stimulated Raman scattering. A possible explanation for the variation of the phase with wavelength is presented.
