We have studied the ferrielectric SmCγ* phase by means of laser beam diffraction and photon correlation spectroscopy. We found that the disordered structure and low frequency fluctuation characteristically distinguish SmCγ* from SmC and SmCA. These phenomena are qualitatively explained by the existing model structure, SmCA*(q T = 1/3), in which the repeating unit of the SmCγ* phase is three layers; one ferroelectric and two antiferroelectric boundaries.
