Key result
Antiplatelet therapy is linked to ~19% lower all-cause mortality in patients with COPD.
Why the study?
It is unclear whether antiplatelet treatment reduces all-cause mortality in patients with COPD despite their high cardiovascular risk and platelet activation.
Does antiplatelet therapy reduce all-cause mortality in patients with COPD?

Does antiplatelet therapy reduce all-cause mortality in patients with COPD?
Antiplatelet therapy is associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality among patients with COPD, independent of confounding factors such as ischemic heart disease.

May support antiplatelet consideration in COPD; hypothesis-generating and leaves open need for RCTs.

Pavasini et al. (2015) conducted a meta-analysis in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (n=11,117). Antiplatelet therapy vs. No antiplatelet therapy was evaluated on All-cause mortality (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.75-0.88). Antiplatelet therapy was associated with significantly lower all-cause mortality in patients with COPD (OR 0.81; 95% CI 0.75-0.88).
