In this paper a framework for rehabilitation is presented for neurodegenerative diseases. Existing models of rehabilitation are elaborated on by proposing a system for selecting interventions along the continuum of care. By staging neurodegenerative diseases into early, middle, and late stages and relating them to the individual's impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities, the framework serves as an organizational tool for planning interventions. Therapeutic management incorporates procedural intervention strategies, consultation, and education. Procedural strategies include preventative, compensatory, and restorative interventions. The relative importance of each aspect of care depends on the stage of the disease. Even though the course of neurodegenerative diseases cannot be altered by physical therapy interventions, quality of life may be enhanced for individuals via therapeutic programs that assist individuals to achieve their fullest physical, psychological, and social function and independence across the disease stages.
