Intraoperative TEE strongly correlates with thermodilution for estimating cardiac output.
Why the study?
Comparison of cardiac output measurements by thermodilution and echocardiographic methods in adult surgical patients was needed to evaluate intraoperative monitoring accuracy.
Does transesophageal echocardiography provide cardiac output measurements that correlate with thermodilution in adult surgical patients?
Observational (n=10)
No
Does transesophageal echocardiography provide cardiac output measurements that correlate with thermodilution in adult surgical patients?
Effect estimate: r=0.98
Transesophageal echocardiography provides cardiac output measurements that correlate highly with invasive thermodilution, offering a useful tool for intraoperative circulatory management.
TEE CO estimates may aid intraoperative monitoring; leaves open larger validation before routine adoption.

Funatsu et al. (1996) conducted an observational in Non-cardiac surgery (n=10). Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) vs. Thermodilution technique (TCO) was evaluated on Correlation of cardiac output measurements between TEE and thermodilution (r=0.98). Transesophageal echocardiography provided accurate intraoperative cardiac output estimations, demonstrating a strong correlation (r=0.98 for left ventricular ejection) with the thermodilution technique.
