Experimental investigation demonstrates molybdenum trioxide contact doping facilitates charge injection into poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl), highlighting pathways for low-cost organic electronics.
Contact formation techniques with use of non-precious metal electrodes must be developed for low-cost manufacturing of organic devices. We report about the contact-doping effect of MoO 3 on charge transfer from the Fermi energy level of contact electrode to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT). When depositing MoO 3 on a P3HT film, MoO 3 -related species penetrated into the P3HT film and existed among the P3HT molecules interstitially. The penetrated Mo ion chemically bonded with the S atom. Energy states arose between the HOMO energy level and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of P3HT due to chemical bonding. The charges injected from the contact electrode can therefore be transferred to the P3HT film via the HOMO-LUMO gap states.
