Measurement of the velocity of erythrocytes in small vessels in tissue is one of the important factors used for examining tissue condition and blood circulation in a living body. Theoretical analysis has been carried out to measure the velocity, based on the dynamic light scattering method. We obtained a theoretical model that, the mean frequency of the power spectrum of scattered laser light from a tissue could be expressed as a function of the velocity, the angular scattering characteristic of an erythrocyte and the mean number of collisions between photons and erythrocytes. The theoretical model was verified by experimental results using a tissue blood flow model system. The velocity and the number density of erythrocytes in a tissue can be measured simultaneously using the method, and thus we can obtain the mass flow of erythrocytes.
