Key result
Cardiorespiratory fitness loses its association with CV risk in youth after adjusting for adiposity.
Why the study?
The relationship between cardiovascular disease risk factors, cardiorespiratory fitness, and different indicators of fatness in children and adolescents was unclear.
Are cardiorespiratory fitness and fatness indicators independently associated with clustered cardiovascular disease risk factors in children and adolescents?
Cross-Sectional (n=491)
Are cardiorespiratory fitness and fatness indicators independently associated with clustered cardiovascular disease risk factors in children and adolescents?
Fatness appears to be a stronger independent predictor of clustered metabolic risk than cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents.
Fatness indicators may drive clustered CV risk more than CRF in youth; leaves open independent fitness effects pending longitudinal data.
Objectives: To investigate the relationship between cardiovascular diseases risk factors, cardiorespiratory fitness and three different indicators of fatness, and investigate if these relationships are independent by each other. Methods: 491 children and adolescents were evaluated.Standardized metabolic risk scores were computed.Multiple linear regression and Univariate Analysis of Variance -GLM were used. Results: Fit youngsters presented a better profile for each of the risk factors.Belonging to the unfit category increased the risk of having high MRS.After adjustments for fatness indicators, the relationship between fitness and MRS disappeared, and obesity indicators presented significant relationship with the MRS. Conclusion:Fitness and fatness are associated with clustered risks by different pathways.

Martins et al. (2014) conducted a cross-sectional in Cardiovascular disease risk factors (n=491). Cardiorespiratory fitness and fatness indicators vs. Unexposed/reference groups (e.g., fit vs unfit) was evaluated on Standardized metabolic risk score (MRS). The significant association between cardiorespiratory fitness and clustered cardiovascular risk factors in children and adolescents disappeared after adjusting for adiposity indicators.
