Using a national sample of married persons inter- viewed in 1980 and again in 1983 and 1988, the impact of divorce on residential change was assessed. Divorce has profound effects on the probability of moving, the number of moves, and in the likelihood of shifts in owner status, dwelling type, and housing quality. However, these factors do not contribute substantially to the symptoms of stress that accompany divorce with the possible exceptions of moving to lower quality housing and shifting from single family to multiple unit dwellings.
