A 12.7×12.7 cm cylindrical lead fluoride (PbF2) crystal has been tested as a Čerenkov shower detector of high energy positrons. The behavior is expected to be similar for electrons and γ-rays of the same energies. The line width (full width at half-maximum) varied from 32% at 300 MeV to 16% at 900 MeV. A linear relationship between pulse height and energy was observed over the measured range.
