Lithium borosilicate and lithium chloroborosilicate were prepared. These are considered basic systems to study the effect of chloride ions on structure and ionic conductivity. It was found that the replacement of Li 2 O by LiCl enhanced the conductivity. It was also found that the molar volume increases on increasing the lithium chloride content in the glasses. Thus this behavior was explained as the formation of wider pathways for the charge carriers, i.e. increase in mobility. The values of activation energy as well as the pre-exponential factor were deduced from the DC data and used together with the peak position and the loss factor frequency dependence from AC data to indicate the distribution of halide ions around the alkali ions or probable sites for their transitions. Moveover, the decrease in the activation energy was attributed to the presence of anions with large radius (halides) which in turn increases the molar volume.
