Honokiol, a bisphenol novel lignan compound extracted from the Magnolia tree, exhibits various pharmacological activities, including anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. However, the therapeutic application of honokiol is limited by its extremely low solubility in aqueous buffer, susceptibility to oxidation in air.The nano-delivery system exhibits superior effects related to small size, volume, surface, and quantum states. As a result, it displays tremendous potential for delivering honokiol.Honokiol primarily relies on nano-delivery systems to enhance its solubility and bioavailability, ultimately improving its therapeutic effectiveness. In this review, we present the advancements in honokiol nano-delivery systems, encompassing a variety of carriers such as nanoliposomes, polymer micelles, polymer nanoparticles, nanosuspensions, zein-based nanocarriers and inorganic nanoparticles, aiming to provide a basis for future research.
