Key result
Hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase alters short-term exogenous NO relaxation into a biphasic response and reverses long-term relaxation.
Why the study?
The influence of hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase on short-term and long-term nitrergic relaxations in the porcine gastric fundus was investigated to understand their interaction.
Population
Circular muscle strips of the pig gastric fundus
Comparison
Hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase exposure vs no exposure

Oxidative stress differentially modulates nitrergic responses in isolated porcine fundus; leaves open relevance to human gastric motility.
In porcine gastric fundus, hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase alters nitrergic relaxation, likely via a nitrated uric acid derivative during exogenous NO exposure.
Colpaert et al. (2000) studied this question. Hypoxanthine (HX) / xanthine oxidase (XO) was evaluated on Nitrergic relaxations in response to electrical field stimulation and exogenous NO. Hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase altered the short-lasting relaxation to exogenous NO into a biphasic relaxation and elicited a reversal of relaxation during long-term electrical field stimulation.
