Key result
Cardiovascular comorbidity in severe COPD is linked to worse symptoms, cardiac remodeling, and poorer survival.
Why the study?
Comorbidity of COPD and cardiovascular disease is important and not fully investigated, particularly regarding clinical signs, lung function, hemodynamics, and outcome predictors.
Does cardiovascular comorbidity (coronary heart disease or hypertension) worsen the clinical course and prognosis in patients with stage 3 to 4 COPD?
Cohort (n=118)
Does cardiovascular comorbidity (coronary heart disease or hypertension) worsen the clinical course and prognosis in patients with stage 3 to 4 COPD?
Cardiovascular comorbidities such as coronary heart disease and hypertension significantly worsen the clinical severity, cardiac remodeling, and mortality risk in patients with advanced COPD.

May support integrated CV monitoring in advanced COPD; leaves open whether treatment modifies prognosis.
Gaynitdinova et al. (2019) conducted a cohort in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cardiovascular comorbidity (n=118). Cardiovascular comorbidity (coronary heart disease or hypertension) vs. COPD without cardiovascular comorbidity was evaluated on Clinical signs, lung function, hemodynamics, and 3-year survival. Cardiovascular comorbidity in patients with stage 3 to 4 COPD was associated with more severe clinical symptoms, heart remodeling, and a trend toward lower 3-year survival.
