The combination of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and prefabricated buildings can provide support for the transformation of the construction industry towards green development. However, there are many barriers in the application of BIM in prefabricated buildings. There are complex interrelationships among them, which is very unfavorable for the development of BIM application in prefabricated buildings. Therefore, based on the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory and Interpretative Structural Modeling (DEMATEL-ISM) method, a comprehensive model of the barrier factors to BIM application in prefabricated buildings is established to explore the interrelationships and mechanisms among these barriers. The results indicate that key barrier factors include support from leaders (Z3), cooperation of stakeholders (Z4), resistance to change (Z5), trust in new technology (Z12), talent shortage (Z14), government policy promotion (Z15), and maturity of software (Z1). These factors present a hierarchical transmission pattern of ‘root - deep - surface’. The root factors, such as the support from leaders (Z3) and trust in new technologies (Z12), cooperation of stakeholders (Z4), resistance to change (Z5), talent shortage (Z14), and the government policy promotion (Z15). Ultimately, it acts on the maturity of software (Z1), etc., forming a multi-path influence mechanism. Therefore, this study proposes targeted coping strategies.
