Paramagnetic effects on nuclear relaxation processes are described in the framework of the Solomon‐Bloembergen concepts. The factors contributing to nuclear relaxation, including the instantaneous electron‐nuclear dipolar and contact couplings and the Curie spin effect, are described using simplified cases. Spectral effects are illustrated, and the factors that allow various metal ions to function as either shift or relaxation agents are qualitatively described.
