Afatinib resolves nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis vegetation without anticoagulation in EGFR-mutated lung cancer.
Why the study?
Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis is difficult to diagnose before cerebral infarction and lacks established treatment, resulting in poor prognosis.
Case Report (n=1)
Targeted molecular therapy with afatinib alone may be effective in resolving nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis associated with EGFR-mutated lung cancer without the need for anticoagulation.
Resolution of NBTE with EGFR TKI alone in lung cancer; hypothesis-generating for anticoagulation-free management pending controlled studies.

Kawamoto et al. (2019) conducted a case report in Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis with EGFR-mutated lung cancer (n=1). Afatinib was evaluated on Resolution of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis and lung cancer response. Afatinib treatment led to the disappearance of aortic valve vegetation from nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis and marked diminution of EGFR-mutated lung cancer without anticoagulation therapy.
