Key result
Statins linked to ~22 months longer time to first treatment in CLL.
Why the study?
The incidence of hypercholesterolemia and its relationship with clinical course in CLL patients were not well characterized.
Does statin use prolong time to first treatment in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia?
Population
231 consecutive patients presenting to a specialized CLL clinic
Comparison
Cholesterol-lowering statins vs no statin therapy
Design
Cohort study

Hypercholesterolemia may influence TFT in CLL; leaves open whether statins alter disease course.
Cohort (n=231)
Does statin use prolong time to first treatment in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia?
Absolute Event Rate: 57.5% vs 36%
p-value: p=<0.02
Statin use is associated with a prolonged time to first treatment in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, suggesting that cholesterol-lowering therapy may favorably impact the disease course.
Chow et al. (2015) conducted a cohort in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) (n=231). Cholesterol-lowering statins vs. Not taking statins was evaluated on Time to first treatment (TFT) excluding patients with 17p deletions (p=<0.02). In patients with CLL (excluding 17p deletions), taking statins was associated with a prolonged median time to first treatment compared to not taking statins (57.5 vs 36 months, p<0.02).
