Thin polymer films were prepared by the rf glow discharge polymerization of carbon disulfide (CS2) monomer gas. The film structure, thermal properties, optical properties and photoconductivity were studied in order to establish the characteristics of the CS2 films. The film composition was found to depend strongly on the polymerization conditions, and ranged from CS0.16 to CS14. A film with high sulfur content sublimated at low temperature, while that with low sulfur content exhibited good photoconductivity. These characteristics are similar to those of chalcogenide glasses rather than other plasma polymers.
