Key result
Novel stress echocardiography technologies enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility over conventional methods.
Why the study?
Stress echocardiography is expanding as a clinical tool, and several emerging technologies may enhance its accuracy and applicability.
Emerging technologies such as automatic edge detection, intravenous contrast, and tissue Doppler imaging show promise for enhancing the accuracy and clinical applicability of stress echocardiography.
May enhance stress echo utility but should not yet change practice; leaves open need for prospective validation trials.
Stress echocardiography has seen substantial expansion as a clinically useful tool for evaluation of patients with chest pain syndromes, determining the physiological significance of coronary artery lesions and assessing prognosis in patients known to have coronary disease. Several newly developing technologies show promise for enhancing the accuracy and clinical applicability of the examination. These include automatic edge detection systems, intravenous contrast for enhanced endocardial definition, tissue Doppler imaging, and tissue characterization techniques. Finally, new methods of cardiovascular stress, including combinations of exercise and pharmacological agents as well as newly developed pharmacological agents, also show promise for enhancing the clinical utility of stress echocardiography.

William F. Armstrong (1995) conducted a review in Chest pain syndromes and coronary disease. Emerging technology in stress echocardiography was evaluated. Emerging technologies in stress echocardiography, such as automatic edge detection, intravenous contrast, and tissue Doppler imaging, show promise for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility.
