The self emulsifying copolymerization of unsaturated polyesters (UP) and styrene was studied. The sequence of dispersing UP and styrene in water profoundly influences the character of the emulsion obtained and the emulsion copolymerization. The relationship between the coagulum formation in the emulsion copolymerization and the structure of the UP molecule was established and the microgels obtained were characterized. The water/monomer‐ratio and the UP/styrene‐ratio were found to be the most important factors controlling the M̄w of the microgel.
