Mexiletine coadministration with theophylline can trigger theophylline toxicity and nonsustained ventricular tachycardia.
Why the study?
Drug interactions between mexiletine and theophylline, including potential proarrhythmia, have been reported but require further clinical characterization.
Case Report (n=1)
Co-administration of mexiletine and theophylline can lead to a clinically significant drug interaction resulting in elevated theophylline levels and proarrhythmia.
Suggests theophylline monitoring with mexiletine co-use; leaves open interaction prevalence and arrhythmia risk.

Kessler et al. (1989) conducted a case report in Ventricular tachycardia and drug interaction (n=1). Mexiletine and theophylline coadministration was evaluated on Proarrhythmia and elevated theophylline levels. Coadministration of mexiletine and theophylline in a 55-year-old man resulted in elevated theophylline levels (31 µg/ml) and recurrent episodes of spontaneous nonsustained ventricular tachycardia.
