Researchers have revealed that ferromagnetism appears in a Pt(100) ultrathin film on a nonmagnetic SrTiO3(100) substrate, whose intensity changes periodically with the Pt thickness at the period of approximately 1 nm. Their theoretical model suggests that quantum-well states formed in the Pt film play an important role in the periodic ferromagnetism.
