Trifecta bioprosthetic valves are associated with early structural valve failure within ~7 years of implantation.
Why the study?
Early failure of first-generation Trifecta bioprosthetic valves due to structural valve degeneration was reported within 7 years after implantation, prompting evaluation of Trifecta GT valves.
Highlights reports of early structural valve degeneration and failure in Trifecta bioprosthetic valves.
Potential early Trifecta GT failure warrants surveillance; novel Level 5 finding leaves durability questions open.
Trifecta bioprosthetic valves with Glide Technology, also known as Trifecta GT (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, Calif), were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2016. These are stented valves with a bovine pericardial sheet externally mounted on a titanium stent. There were several reports of early failure involving the first-generation Trifecta that were related to structural valve degeneration secondary to leaflet calcification, pannus formation, and cusps tear presenting less than 7 years after implantation.

Tchouta et al. (2020) studied Structural valve degeneration. Trifecta GT bioprosthetic valves was evaluated on Early failure. Trifecta bioprosthetic valves have been associated with early failure related to structural valve degeneration presenting less than 7 years after implantation.
